Seawolves Plate Season-High 17 Runs in Victory over Sacred Heart

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team put on an offensive show at Joe Nathan Field on Wednesday afternoon with a season-high 17 runs and a season best 21 hits, including three home runs, in the 17-7 victory over visiting Sacred Heart.
 
Junior LF Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) started the home run parade for the Seawolves (24-19) with a two-run home run that broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning. Sophomore 1B Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) and sophomore RF Michael Wilson (Colinia, N.J.) both belted two-run home runs in Stony Brook's seven-run third inning.
 
Stony Brook's bats also banged out a pair of triples and four doubles, including three off the bat of senior CF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.).
 
Sophomore RHP Sam Turcotte (Toronto, Ont.) picked up his first win of the season with 4.0 innings of work in which he allowed just one run on one hit with four strike outs.
 
Turning Point
With the score tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the second inning, junior LF Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) sent a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence with sophomore RF Michael Wilson (Colinia, N.J.) on base after a walk. That home run gave Stony Brook the lead for good.

"This is a great start to the final homestand. We did a terrific job offensively today and continued to play good defense. This weekend will be a good test for us with these non-conference games."

  • Sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) swiped one base on Wednesday for his 26th stolen base of the season to move him within 10 of the single season record of 36 held by Travis Jankowski.
  • Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) also collected four hits on Wednesday now has 19 multi-hit games of the season, including three four-hit games.
  • Junior LF Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) hit his fourth home run of the season in the second inning on Wednesday.
  • Sophomore RF Michael Wilson (Colinia, N.J.) recorded his third home run of the season in the third inning on Wednesday. He has now hit eight in his career.
  • Wilson also collected three hits on Wednesday for his 13th multi-hit game of the season and his fourth three-hit game.
  • Sophomore 1B Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) blasted his fourth home run of the season and fifth of his career in the third inning on Wednesday.
  • Senior CF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) had three hits, all doubles, on Wednesday for his eighth multi-hit game of the season. He also drove in four runs.
  • Junior DH Michael Russell (Staten Island, N.Y.) had three hits on Wednesday for his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Junior 2B Brandon Janofsky (Jackson, N.J.) collected three hits on Wednesday for his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Senior 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) legged out his 11th career triple on Wednesday and sits eighth on Stony Brook's career triples list.
  • Stony Brook banged out four doubles and has now hit 95 this season and remains among the NCAA leaders.
  • Head coach Matt Senk picked up career win number 795 on Wednesday and is now just five wins away from the 800 win milestone.
 
On Deck?
Stony Brook continues its final homestand of the season when Bryant and UMass come to visit Joe Nathan Field this weekend. The Seawolves will face Bryant in a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday and a single game at Noon on Sunday sandwiched around a single game with UMass at Noon on Saturday. Saturday's game is the Autism Awareness Game.
