TAMPA, FLORIDA– The Stony Brook volleyball team opens the 2018 season with three matches in Tampa in a South Florida Tournament. The defending 2017 America East Champs will face Jacksonville, San Jose State and USF.

Scouting Jacksonville
Jacksonville finished the ASUN Conference regular season with a 12-2 record. The team earned the number two seed in the 2017 ASUN Tournament. The Dolphins were then upset by #3 Florida Gulf Coast in the ASUN Tournament semifinal 3-0. Junior outside hitter Mallory Mattingly returns to the team coming off a season in which she was named to the All-ASUN First Team. Mattingly lead the ASUN with 1,150 attacks.

Scouting San Jose State
The Spartans finished the 2017 regular season with a 17-12 overall record and 9-9 in the MW. The record was good for fifth in the standings and the best start in the MW since joining the conference in 2013. The team was picked to finish sixth in their conference preseason poll. Junior middle blocker Thaliana Grajeda returns to the team for another season. Last year, she averaged 1.79 kills and 0.76 blocks per set. She was also one of 12 players selected to comprise an all-star team representing the Mountain West at the 2018 Global Challenge in July.

Scouting USF
The Bulls finished the 2017 season 12-18 and 7-13 in The American. This year, middle blocker Clara Payne looks to lead the team. The Osteen, Florida native heads into 2018 after leading the Bulls in points (300), blocks (99) and hitting percentage (.289).

Brooks Looks to Continue Surge
Senior McKyla Brooks posted a .326 hitting percentage as a junior in 2017, putting her at No. 8 on Stony Brook's single-season chart.

Kerstetter Aims to Build on Successful First Year
Sophomore Kiani Kerstetter tallied 547 digs in her first year, which was good for second on the Seawolves' single-season list.

Defending the 2017 Conference Title
The team claimed its first America East Championship as it knocked off second-seeded Binghamton 3-0. This was the second sweep of the post season for the Seawolves. Stony Brook then went on to make its first NCAA Tournament appearance against Nebraska.
