Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Seawolves Dominate in 4-0 Victory over UMass Lowell

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's soccer team picked up a win in dominating fashion over No. 16 UMass Lowell, 4-0 on Friday night from LaValle Stadium. It was the Seawolves' first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since defeating then-No.25 New Hampshire, 2-0 on Oct. 8, 2016.

The Seawolves scored early and often to move to 5-3-1 (2-0-0 AE) on the season, while conference-favorite UMass Lowell falls to 6-3-1 (1-1-0 AE). With the win, head coach Ryan Anatol became the winningest coach in Stony Brook men's soccer Division 1 history.

Quoting head coach Ryan Anatol
"We talked about getting points in the league, so to start off with getting six points, we're really excited about that," said Anatol. It's a really good win against a good team, but not only was it a good win but I felt it was a really good performance. We had a plan coming into the game, we wanted to be really aggressive defensively and put them under pressure and make it difficult for them to play ... I think we did a really good job of that."

Highlights
  • After a slow start to the contest, freshman Rondell Payne (San Fernando, Trinidad) scored his first career goal on a deflected cross to give the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute.
  • The Riverhawks took the next five shots of the game but were unable to get anything past freshman goalkeeper Christian Miesch (Brig, Switzerland). Miesch picked up his second career shutout in the win.
  • Just before halftime, UMass Lowell's Chase Reichenberg picked up a red card, but senior Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) was unable to get a penalty kick past the Riverhawks' keeper.
  • In the 65th minute, graduate student Arni Jakobsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) found senior Martieon Watson (Vessigny, Trinidad) on a corner kick, who relayed it to junior Gustavo Fernandes (West Babylon, N.Y.) for a goal.
  • Just two minutes later, junior Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad) put away a goal to give the Seawolves a 3-0 lead. Gamwanya picked up the assist.
  • In the 77th minute, Watson drilled a shot from 15 yards out to put the Seawolves up by four.
  • The Riverhawks took the last two shots of the night but were unable to convert.
  • In the win, the Seawolves held UMass Lowell to just four shots on goal.
