STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook men's basketball juniors
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.),
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) and
Makale Foreman (Kingsport, Tenn.) have made their mark to start the 2019-20 campaign, coming off a weekend in which they combined for 149 of the team's 201 total points in a sweep of the Islander Invitational.
As one of six teams in the country without a senior, the Seawolves have turned to this trio of juniors to lead and they have done so in the team's first six games. Olaniyi is coming off an All-Conference year, while Garcia is the league's reigning Sixth Man of the Year.
After sitting a year, the Chattanooga transfer Foreman has bolstered a Stony Brook offense that is averaging just less than 70 points a game this season. He's second on the team in scoring at a 13.7-per-night clip. He's also third on the team in shooting from distance, hitting 18 of 51 threes this season (35.3 percent).
The guard mainly came in clutch in the second period of the three games in Corpus Christi last weekend, hitting nine of his 14 shots from beyond the arc in the second half of games. His scoring average during the final 20 minutes was 12.3.
Olaniyi came in hitting the 20-point plateau twice in his first two seasons in a Seawolves uniform. He has done so thrice in the last four games, including knocking down three of four shots from beyond the arc in a wire-to-wire win against UTRGV. He also scored 20 in a win over the defending Summit League Champions, North Dakota State.
He's currently at fifth in the America East in scoring, entering the weekend at an 18.8 per game clip. He has hit 13 of his last 23 shots from the field, including seven of 12 from beyond the arc.
Garcia has increased his minutes role this season but has not decreased his production, currently scoring at a 12.6-per-game rate while hauling in 5.6 rebounds per game.
He has made 50 percent of his shots in his six starts this season, hitting on 23 of 46 attempts. He's also been tenacious on the offensive glass, hauling in over two per game.
The Seawolves return to the floor Saturday afternoon, taking on Wagner at 3 p.m. on Staten Island. Don't miss the next time to see the Seawolves at Island Federal Arena when they host Manhattan on December 2 at 7 p.m. Get your tickets now!
