STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook men's lacrosse student-athletes will have one of the top players in the Premier Lacrosse League tutoring them during the upcoming season.
In new rankings of the top 50 players in the PLL,
Mike Chanenchuk checked in at No. 11.
The ranking is particularly meaningful because the PLL players were polled.
The 29-year-old Chanenchuk, a midfielder with the Whipsnakes, joined Stony Brook as an assistant coach this past summer.
"The PLL is loaded with elite talent at every position," Chanenchuk said. "To be ranked in the top 50 by my peers is an incredible honor. These are the best players in the world. I am grateful to be seen as one of the best."
In a pair of games in September with the Whipsnakes, Chanenchuk tallied four goals and an assist as well as two ground balls.
Chanenchuk, an East Setauket native — "right around the corner" from Stony Brook University — previously had been an assistant coach at Sacred Heart and New York Tech.
He earned All-America honors at both Princeton and Maryland and earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors in 2010.
Chanenchuk played five seasons with Major League Lacrosse's Charlotte Hounds and was a three-time All-Star in the league. He was the 11th overall pick in 2014.
"I am excited as an assistant coach here at Stony Brook to pass on all of the knowledge I have gained from playing and coaching," he said. "It is an exciting time at Stony Brook as we continue to develop our team, our student-athletes and culture. It is a tough process, but a rewarding one, as we strive to be a top-10 program."
