Seawolves Cruise Past New Hampshire in 30-Point Triumph

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A total team effort powered the Stony Brook women's basketball team to a 30-point victory over New Hampshire, 67-37, at the Island Federal Arena on Saturday afternoon. The decision put the Seawolves at 19 total wins this season – the most in the Coach McCombs era.

Nine total Stony Brook players got on the score sheet with senior G Shania Johnson (Frederick, Md.) (17), senior G Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) (14) and sophomore F McKenzie Bushee (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (10) all hitting double-figures.

The team is now tied for third in the America East standings along with UAlbany with identical 8-4 conference records.

McCOMBS REACTION
"I thought we had a great defensive effort today, especially controlling the boards. We were able to create some offense from our defense as well. It was key for our bench to come in and give us great production today."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Stony Brook hit the first basket of the contest and didn't look back, holding New Hampshire to just 26 percent shooting for a grand total of 37 points – the least amount of points the defense has allowed this season.
  • The team's first sequence of the afternoon was big, starting with a Matthews' three on the offensive end while redshirt sophomore F Oksana Gouchie-Provencher (Montreal, Canada) laid down a huge block on the other end of the court.
  • With under two minutes to play in the first quarter, the Seawolves only had a one-point advantage, but closed the period out with an 8-0 run that was capped by a long buzzer-beater jumper by Johnson.
  • The momentum kept going in Stony Brook's favor in the second frame, outscoring the Wildcats, 16-7.
  • New Hampshire chipped away at its 36-18 halftime deficit in the third, reeling off a 9-2 run to get within 11, but Johnson hit a big three on the following possession that sparked a 9-0 Seawolf run to put the home team up by 20.
  • The Seawolves' defensive efforts peaked in the fourth, holding the Wildcats to just two made field goals.
NOTES
  • Johnson is now No. 2 all-time in career 3-pointers made (171) and tied for the second spot in single-season threes (76).
  • In career threes, she is just 10 away from tying the school record set by Mykeema Ford (2003-07) while being 19 out from tying her own record in single-season threes.
  • Matthews is also in the top-10 for single-season threes, tying for the eighth spot with 49.
  • With three blocks on the day, Gouchie-Provencher has bumped up to eighth in the record book in single-season blocks (35).
