Johnson Claims Another Record in 70-59 Victory at UMBC

BALTIMORE – Senior G Shania Johnson (Frederick, Md.) continued her stellar senior campaign on Wednesday night, claiming yet another program record in a second-half comeback victory over UMBC, 70-59, at the UMBC Event Center.
 
Already breaking school records this season in single-season assists, single-game threes and single-game assists – also the America East record – Johnson topped the career threes mark with a total of 184 so far throughout her two-year career as a Seawolf. Mykeema Ford (2003-07) held the previous standard with 181.
 
The team has officially clinched the No. 3 seed in the America East Playoffs with a conference mark of 10-5.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Down 16-29 late in the second quarter following a 25-5 UMBC run, Johnson, sophomore G/F Hailey Zeise (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore G/F Jonae Cox (Portsmouth, Va.) all splashed in threes to help cut the team's deficit to just seven by the time the halftime buzzer rang.
  • Stony Brook crept back into it slowly in the third quarter, thanks to a 10-point performance by sophomore F India Pagan (New London, Conn.) which included a perfect 6-6 performance from the free throw line.
  • The Seawolves finally reclaimed its first lead of the of the contest since early in the second quarter with 4:14 left in the third following a three from Johnson and ultimately found itself tied with the Retrievers, 46-46, with just 10 minutes left to play as Matthews put in a clutch three at the buzzer.
  • The fourth quarter was all Stony Brook, as the team outscored UMBC 24-13 en route to the win.
  • Matthews scored 10 of her 16 total points in the fourth, going 4-5 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc.
  • The Seawolves also began the game on a high note, scoring 11 points unanswered after UMBC scored the first four points of the game.
NOTES
  • Pagan led the team in scoring on the evening with 17, her most since tallying 19 at New Hampshire on Jan. 12.
  • Matthews and Johnson backed her up with 16 points apiece.
  • Matthews, Johnson and redshirt sophomore F Kina Smith (Bronx, N.Y.) all tied career highs.
  • Matthews tied her career's best in rebounds (8), Johnson in steals (6) and Smith in points (6).
  • The team's largest lead of the game came with 3:07 left in the contest as Matthews drained a three to give Stony Brook an 11-point lead.
  • After shooting just 25 percent in the second quarter, the Seawolves exploded for 62.5 percent shooting in the fourth, making 10 total field goals – including three triples.
  • Stony Brook scored 26 of its points in the paint, 19 from turnovers and 11 form the bench.
