STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Consistency is key when it comes to success on the football field and that is no different at Stony Brook, where all three starters return at rover and the two safety positions when the Seawolves open the 2019 season on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. against Bryant in Kenneth P. In fact, the three returning starters, senior
Synceir Malone (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) and junior
EJ Fineran (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) at safety and junior
Augie Contressa (Commack, N.Y./Commack) at rover, have a combined 25 career starts that includes the trio starting each game of the 2018 season.
Â
"Last year was a time for everybody to get together and get more playing time," said Malone. "This year coming back we are united and there is more camaraderie. We are just looking to make a lot of plays, do our job and see where we can go from there."
Â
Contressa is Stony Brook's leading returning tackler from 2018 when he recorded 73 stops with 10.0 tackles-for-loss and one interception for safeties/rover coach
Rich Reichert, who enters his seventh season on the Seawolves' staff. Fineran's 53 total tackles and a 79-yard pick-six, and Malone's 53 total tackles and two interceptions are not far behind.Â
Â
"We bring back all three starters with
Augie Contressa,
EJ Fineran and
Synceir Malone," said Reichert. "They have played a ton of snaps for us and made some big plays, especially throughout last season. We also have some younger guys that are stepping into new roles and are continuing to developing and grow a little bit day-by-day and learning from the older guys."
Â
Those "younger guys" Reichert mentions are sophomores
Randy Pringle (Brooklyn N.Y./Christ the King) and
Justin Burns (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara), along with redshirt freshmen
Oniel Stanbury (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall),
Randall Hepburn Jr. (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) and
Kendall Nero-Clark (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East). This group adds talented depth to both the safeties and rover spots.
Â
Stony Brook has seven home games in 2019 that get underway on Thursday Aug. 29 against Bryant. The Seawolves also welcome Wagner (Sept. 14) and Fordham (Sept. 21) in non-conference games at LaValle Stadium. The CAA Football home schedule gets underway on Oct. 5 when James Madison visits Long Island for Homecoming. New Hampshire (Oct. 12), Towson (Nov. 9) and UAlbany (Nov. 23) round out the home conference schedule.
