STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- When it comes to returning experience on the Stony Brook football team for the 2019 season, it is hard to beat a combined 68 starts. That is the number of starts returning to the offensive line for the Seawolves.
Â
The group, guided by
Chris Bache in his fourth season as the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, is led by senior
Mason Zimmerman (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) who has started 31 straight games on the offensive line and is slated to be the starting right guard come opening night on Aug. 29 when Stony Brook hosts Bryant at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium (

Â
"For the first time in a long time in my career we've got a lot of depth," Bache said. "We have seven, eight, maybe nine guys and a lot of competition going on between all these kids. The drop off is not a lot, which is good. For the most part the kids are playing well and are competing with one another."
Â
Right behind Zimmerman in career starts is fellow senior
Joe Detorie (Fallston, Md./Fallston) with 21. All of Detorie's starts have come at center where he and junior
Anthony Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y./H Frank Carey) will once again split time this season.
Â
Sophomore
Kyle Nunez (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), a freshman All-American in 2018 and the starter at right guard in the final six games of the season, returns to the right side of the line and will be backed up by senior
Jaelen Vazquez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), who is a versatile lineman that can play multiple positions.
Â
On the outside, junior
Ian McLean (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez) and redshirt freshman
Larry Ross Jr. (Staten Island, N.Y./Peddie School) will compete for the right tackle spot, while sophomore
Cameron Lucas (Lorton, Va./South County) and sophomore transfer from UConn
James Tunstall (Indian Head, Md./Lackey) will battle for the left tackle position.
Â
Sophomore transfer
Justin Morgan (Bronx, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) from Independence C.C. and junior
Brennan Souhrada (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) could also battle for some playing time as well.
Â
"This is a great group of guys," Zimmerman said. "We have seven guys that have college football experience and it will be a great to be out on the field with them. This is going to be a really good group and we have to be the leaders of the offense."
Â
Stony Brook has seven home games in 2019 that get underway on Aug. 29 against Bryant. The Seawolves also welcome Wagner (Sept. 14) and Fordham (Sept. 21) in non-conference games at LaValle Stadium. The CAA Football home schedule gets underway on Oct. 5 when James Madison visits Long Island for Homecoming. New Hampshire (Oct. 12), Towson (Nov. 9) and UAlbany (Nov. 23) round out the home conference schedule.
