STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football freshman kicker Michael Mannino has been named the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in the Golden Apple victory on Saturday, the conference announced this morning.

The rookie becomes the first special teams player to earn the award since punter Mitchell Wright received the honor for the Seawolves on Sept. 2, 2019. He also became the first freshman in the conference to earn the award this season.

Mannino was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points in Stony Brook's 47-12 triumph over rival UAlbany. The freshman booted a 46-yard field goal just before halftime to put SBU ahead by four and added a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter. Mannino also recorded five touchbacks on nine kickoffs.

This season, the Long Island native is 4-for-6 on field goal attempts. He set a new program record early in the season with a 49-yard field goal against Fordham and later hit another 49-yarder in the victory over Merrimack, which is also tied for the third-longest kick in the CAA this season. He is 5-for-5 on extra point attempts and has tallied 12 touchbacks on 34 kickoffs.

The Stony Brook football team will have next week off for their bye and return to action on Oct. 18, heading to West Long Branch, N.J., to face No. 14 Monmouth. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
