STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook football defensive coordinator
Bobby McIntyre is retiring. And head coach
Chuck Priore didn't have look far for his replacement.
Priore, who completed his 14th season with the Seawolves this past fall, has promoted
Rob Noel to succeed McIntyre as Stony Brook's defensive coordinator.
Noel has been with the Seawolves for the past six seasons as the defensive line coach. He also served as the defensive run game coordinator this past season.
"I'm excited about giving
Rob Noel the opportunity," Priore said. "He's been here six years and has been a person that has grown up in our system. We've played great defense over his time here. He has the respect of our players and certainly has the respect of our coaches. He's a bright young person that will lead by example on and off the field."
Said Noel: "This is a unique challenge, and I'm excited to take it on. Stony Brook has been an awesome place for me to be for six years. It is a new challenge, but there are a lot of familiar faces to help me with it. I'm ready to get after it and get going for next season."
During Noel's six seasons at Stony Brook, the defensive unit has finished in the top five in total defense nationally three times. — No. 3 in 2014, No. 1 in 2015 and third again in 2016.
During that time, Noel has enjoyed the opportunity to coach some of the best defensive linemen in the CAA with the likes of Victor Ochi,
John Haggart, Aaron Thompson and
Sam Kamara.
Ochi broke Stony Brook's career records for sacks (32.5) and tackles for loss (49.0) during his career with the Seawolves. He was named CAA Football's Defensive Player of the Year in 2015 and earned first-team All-America honors from College Sports Madness and STATS. Ochi went on to sign with the Baltimore Ravens and played in two games for the New York Jets in 2016.
Thompson finished his career ninth in career sacks at Stony Brook with 13.5. He also was named All-CAA Football twice during his career as a Seawolf.
Haggart, a third-team All-CAA selection in 2018, finished his career fifth in career tackles-for-loss at Stony Brook with 38.0.
Kamara, who recently earned a fifth year from the NCAA, has 21.0 tackles-for-loss and 13.0 sacks.
Noel will remain coaching the defensive line in addition to his new role.
