Men's Lax Assistant Coaches Chanenchuk, Kelly Compete with Team USA in Win over Japan

Stony Brook assistant coaches Mike Chanenchuk (2) and Tommy Kelly (14) on Saturday in San Antonio. The duo helped Team USA defeat Japan, 8-5.
SAN ANTONIO — The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team has some pretty good players on its coaching staff, too.

First-year assistant coaches Mike Chanenchuk and Tommy Kelly both competed for Team USA on Saturday in an 8-5 exhibition win against Japan in the Spring Premiere in San Antonio.

The duo also will play on Sunday in an intrasquad "Blue-White Scrimmage" for fans at the University of the Incarnate Word.

"It's been a dream of mine since picking up a stick to put on the red and blue," Kelly said. "Every lacrosse player dreams of this moment. It's an absolute honor to play alongside Mike and the best pool of talent in the country."

Chanenchuk joined Stony Brook men's lacrosse as assistant coach and offensive coordinator in July. He arrived after two seasons in a similar capacity at Sacred Heart. He previously served as an assistant coach at New York Tech for two seasons.

As a collegian, Chanenchuk was the 2010 Ivy League Rookie of the Year with Princeton, earning first-team All-Ivy League and USILA second-team All-America honors. After transferring to Maryland, he was an All-American in 2013 and 2014.

Chanenchuk joined Major League Lacrosse's Charlotte Hounds after being selected 11th overall in the 2014 draft. He twice was named an MLL All-Star.

More recently, Chanenchuk was named a Premier Lacrosse League All-Star last summer as a member of the Whipsnakes. In December, he was voted as the 11th-ranked player in the league.

Kelly, a Rocky Point native and faceoff specialist, earned a Major Lacrosse League All-Star selection while playing for the Denver Outlaws in 2017. He has played in the league for three seasons and had the MLL's top faceoff percentage in 2018.

Kelly also played in the inaugural Premier Lacrosse League season this past year with the Chaos.

Stony Brook begins formal practices on Jan. 13. The Seawolves open their first season with Anthony Gilardi at the helm on Feb. 11 against St. John's at LaValle Stadium.
