STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Joe Spallina will begin his ninth season at the Stony Brook women's lacrosse program's helm as a Hall of Fame selection.
 
The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2020 on Wednesday and Spallina was chosen as one of 20 prominent Suffolk County sports figures to be honored. 
 
"I am extremely honored and humbled to be inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame," Spallina said. "It's beyond words. This type of honor is possible due to the tremendous support and belief of people in my life. I want to thank my wife MaryBeth and our incredible kids for their undying love and support. Along with my incredible family, I also want to thank the amazing assistants I have had through the years as well as administrators that truly believed in my family and me. My journey has been a unique one from an elementary school teacher to a Division I and pro coach."
 
The official induction ceremony will take place on May 26 at Watermill Caterers in Smithtown.
 
After taking over the Stony Brook women's lacrosse program in 2012, Spallina immediately turned the Seawolves into a powerhouse, including a No. 1 national ranking in 2018. 
 
He has produced numerous All-Americans and Tewaaraton nominees and has led Stony Brook to seven straight America East titles and NCAA appearances. 
 
As a women's lacrosse head coach, Spallina has more than 200 career wins between his time at Stony Brook and his alma mater, Adelphi. With the Panthers, he led the team to three straight Division II national championships.
 
He also coached at the professional level with the Long Island Lizards and currently serves as the Major League Lacrosse team's general manager.

No. 12 Stony Brook women's lacrosse opens its 2020 season on Feb. 12 against second-ranked Syracuse inside the Carrier Dome.
