SAN MARCOS, Texas — A pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts helped the Stony Brook baseball team notch its first victory of the season.
Ellis Schwartz's first career hit, a two-out double in the eighth, plated fellow freshman
Brett Paulsen to lift the Seawolves over Texas State, 3-2, in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader.
Brandon Bonanno produced a career-high six-out save while tossing no-hit relief.
Nick DeGennaro had a strong season-opening performance, going seven innings while limiting Texas State to two runs on two hits and striking out six to earn the win.
All but one Seawolves batter recorded a hit as the team amassed 11 in total. Seven of them came with two outs.
"Bonanno was outstanding coming in and shutting the door in the last two innings with just a one-run lead," coach Matt Senk said.
Stony Brook (1-2) dropped Game 1 of the doubleheader, 6-0.
Evan Giordano continued his strong start to 2020, recording hits in four of six at-bats in the twin bill.
Chris Hamilton also recorded multiple hits in the second game, finishing 3-for-5 with a double.
It was Texas State's pitching that shined in Game 1, limiting the Seawolves to three hits.
Turcotte allowed two runs over five innings in Game 1, walking one and striking out three.
The season-opening series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
"Our starting pitching picked up where it left off last night," Senk said after Saturday's split. "Turcotte and DeGennaro were both terrific, but unfortunately we could only produce enough offense to win the second game of the doubleheader."
