SAN MARCOS, Texas — Freshman
Stanton Leuthner provided the Stony Brook baseball team with a lead courtesy of a tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the seventh on Sunday, setting up the Seawolves for a potential come-from-behind victory.
However, Texas State matched Stony Brook's production with three runs in the bottom half and held on for a 4-3 win to earn the series victory.
Leuthner had highlighted a three-run seventh for the Seawolves with a shot to left field that plated
John Tuccillo for a 3-1 lead. Tuccillo got the Seawolves on the scoreboard by plating
Johnny Decker with a double in the preceding at-bat.
Three straight hits against debuting
Brandon Lashley (0-1) put the Bobcats ahead in the bottom half — the latter two coming with two outs.
A throwing error from Tuccillo had allowed Texas State to open the scoring in the second against freshman
Josh O'Neill in his collegiate debut.
O'Neill limited Texas State to that lone unearned run on two hits while striking out four in five innings.
All three pitchers used by Stony Brook on Sunday were making their collegiate debuts.
Brendan Disonell pitched a perfect eighth to keep Stony Brook within a run heading into the final frame.
The Seawolves (1-3) next head to South Carolina next weekend for a three-game series with ACC foe Clemson.
