STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Ten of the past 11 America East regular-season championships and three of the last four tournament tiles have been won by Stony Brook or Vermont.
This year, the men's basketball teams are yet again first and second in the conference standings as the regular season winds down.
And they meet in a nationally televised Thursday night matchup at Island Federal Arena.
"These are the games we love to play in," redshirt junior forward
Andrew Garcia said. "We come to Stony Brook for opportunities like this. We can't wait to show who we are on national TV."
The game, picked up by ESPNU, is also designated as a "Red Out."
The team will wear its red uniforms and encourages all fans in attendance to also wear the Seawolves' dominant color.
"We want to be able to put an America East banner up there," freshman guard
Tyler Stephenson-Moore said. "If we can do that, we can make sure to have our awesome fans backing us in the playoffs."
Stony Brook won the first meeting between the teams, handing Vermont its lone league loss on Jan. 8 in Burlington.
The madness that officially begins on March 7 with the America East quarterfinals begins in Stony Brook's mind Thursday night.
"This is a playoff game for us," Garcia said.
With a win, the Seawolves will pull within a game of Vermont for first place. The Seawolves hold the tiebreaker should both teams end up with the same record. A loss puts the Catamounts three games up with five games remaining.
