STONY BROOK, N.Y. — When
Michael Bollinger is not stopping balls whizzing in his direction at more than 100 mph, the Stony Brook men's lacrosse captain often is found at Holbrook Fire Department Station No. 2.
Bollinger, the starting goalkeeper for the Seawolves, began his association with his hometown fire department at age 10 as a junior firefighter. His volunteer work continued when he started answering emergency calls while a senior at Sachem East High School. And he was cleared to begin driving a fire truck and ambulance upon turning 21.
It's that service that has caused Bollinger to be selected as the Centereach Hyundai Student-Athlete of the Month for August.
Bollinger was named this past spring as a USILA Scholar All-American and America East Honor Roll recipient.
He earned his bachelor's degree in business management in May and is back for an extra season pursuing a coaching certificate during the 2020-21 academic year.
Bollinger recorded a career-high 22 saves in an 11-10 overtime win against Brown on Feb. 22 and recorded all five of the Seawolves' victories in goal in 2020.
