RICHMOND, Va. – Redshirt junior running back
Ty Son Lawton, redshirt senior offensive lineman
Kyle Nunez, and redshirt freshman linebacker
Tyler King claimed All-CAA honors as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Lawton was tabbed to the All-CAA First Team, while Nunez and King earned All-CAA Second Team honors.
"All three student-athletes are deserving of the honor. They were three impact players in our program and each one of them had a very good year.
Ty Son Lawton was a 1,000-yard rusher, our offensive catalyst, moved the chains for us, was a physical runner, had a lot of touchdowns, and really improved his game this year.
On the offensive line,
Kyle Nunez is a returning all-conference player – I think he probably had his best campaign of his collegiate career this year. He really controlled the interior part of our offensive line.
Tyler King was a young kid, who didn't surprise us based on what we saw in the spring in limited action and summer preseason. He is a football player, and is very deserving of the award," said head coach
Chuck Priore.
Lawton finished the season as the CAA leading rusher with 1,088 yards on 216 carries. His 1,088 rushing yards were the 10
th-most in a single-season in program history and the most since Donald Liotine ran for 1,148 yards in 2018. The redshirt junior led the league in rushing yards per game with 98.9 and was second in rushing touchdowns with 10. He ranked ninth in all of NCAA FCS in rushing, 11
th in rushing yards per game, and tied 24
th in rushing touchdowns.
The Staten Island, N.Y. native ran for a new career-high 192 yards and two touchdowns vs. Delaware on October 16. In that game he registered a 99-yard touchdown run, which was the longest play from scrimmage in program history, tied for the longest play in CAA history, tied for the longest rush in all of FCS, and tied for the longest play from scrimmage in all of FCS this season. It was just the third 90-plus yard offensive play in program history and the first since November 23, 2013. He was selected as the CAA Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 17, after his career game.
Nunez anchored the offensive line all season long from right guard. The redshirt senior helped lead the Seawolves to 10 100-plus yard rushing performances this season. The team ran for 200 yards or more in three games this season and racked up a season-high 321 rushing yards in the, 36-14, win over UAlbany to reclaim the Golden Apple.
He has been tabbed to an All-CAA team four years in a row and it marks the third time that he claimed Second Team honors. Nunez helped the running game average 176.1 yards per game, the third-most in the CAA this season and the Seawolves rushed for 19 touchdowns as a team, which were tied for the most in the conference. He aided Lawton's career year as he helped pave the way for the running back to rush for over 1,000 yards this season.
King recorded 95 tackles (50 solo, 45 assists), 12.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble in 11 games. At the conclusion of the regular season, King led all CAA rookies in total tackles and ranked fourth overall. His 50 solo tackles were the most in the conference this season.
The Wexford, Pa. native registered seven tackles or more in nine games this season and racked up 10 tackles or more in four games. He tallied a career-high 12 tackles in a game on two occasions. He first made 12 stops at Oregon on September 18. Later in the season, he totaled 12 tackles in a win over Delaware on October 16.
He is one of 23 finalists for the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the national FCS freshman player of the year. King took home the CAA Rookie of the Week award twice this season. He was first named the conference Rookie of the Week on September 20, and then claimed the honor on November 8.
