Women’s Hoops Hits the Road to Take On New York Foe Fordham: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (7-0) travels to the Bronx to continue their campaign against A10 opponent Fordham (4-3) on Thursday, December 2, at 7 p.m. The game is set to air on ESPN+.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Stony Brook currently holds a 1-5 all-time record against Fordham. The Seawolves secured their only win against the Rams on Fordham's home turf on December 8, 2012, with a 58-46 win. Stony Brook held Fordham without a basket for the first 7:03 of the game. The Rams' first six points of the game came from the free-throw line. Stony Brook fell to Fordham, 62-58, the last time the two teams went head-to-head on November 25, 2020, on the Island. India Pagan posted a double-double totaling 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Stony Brook knocked off New York foe St. Francis Brooklyn, 71-64, on Sunday afternoon. Graduate forward Leighah-Amori Wool knocked down a three within the first two minutes to get the fast-paced contest started. The Seawolves were led by four veteran student-athletes who scored in double figures as they improved to 7-0, their best start to a season in program history. Junior guard Gigi Gonzalez, senior forward Nairimar Vargas-Reyes, graduate forward McKenzie Bushee, and Wool accounted for 58 of the team's 71 points. Vargas-Reyes recorded her first career double-double finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds. It marked the second game in a row that the Seawolves had at least four student-athletes finish a game in double figures. Gonzalez led the way with 17 points, Wool followed closely behind raking in 16 points. Stony Brook had five score in double-digits against Ivy League opponent Columbia on Nov. 24.
 
IN THE RANKS: Stony Brook's 42.6 three-point percentage currently ranks fourth in the nation. The Seawolves are just behind Eastern Michigan (42.7%), Nebraska (43.6%), and Texas A&M (44.7%). Stony Brook pulled in at seventh in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 Poll that was released on Tuesday, November 30. The Seawolves were the only America East team ranked in the poll.
 
NEW YORK'S TEAM: The Seawolves are 4-0 this season against teams that hail from New York state. Stony Brook has earned wins over St. John's, Iona, Columbia, and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Seawolves are slated to play five more New York state opponents this season: Fordham, Marist, Hofstra, Binghamton (twice), and UAlbany (twice).
 
SCOUTING THE RAMS: Fordham returns from Cancun, Mexico where they competed in the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 25-27. The Rams recorded a 1-2 record in the challenge bringing in their only win against Houston (67-53). Fordham fell to No. 6 Baylor (68-45) and Arizona State (58-43). The team's scoring offense is led by junior guard Anna DeWolfe and senior guard Asiah Dingle. DeWolfe and Dingle combined to rake in 30 of the team's 43 points against Arizona State. Head coach Stephanie Gaitley is in her 11th year at the helm of Fordham. Gaitley has become the program's winningest coach and has brought two Atlantic 10 championship titles to the Bronx. Gaitley is 2-1 all-time against Stony Brook.
