STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Bring it on!
The sixth-ranked Stony Brook women's lacrosse team has added a game this Sunday at top-ranked North Carolina.
The season-opening tilt between the powerhouses will begin at Noon in Chapel Hill, N.C., and be televised by ACC Network Extra.
It will mark the first time the programs have met.
The Seawolves have played a top-ranked team three times, facing Maryland during the 2011 regular season as well as in the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2017.
Stony Brook, itself, occupied the top spot in the polls throughout the 2018 season.
The game came about after Stony Brook's originally scheduled season opener next Thursday at Villanova and a UNC game against James Madison this weekend both were postponed.
Stony Brook's schedule gauntlet then continues with a game at No. 3 Syracuse on Feb. 27.
The Seawolves opened last season with a dramatic win against the then-No. 4 Orange inside the Carrier Dome.
North Carolina unanimously was voted in the top spot in the recently released IWLCA coaches preseason poll.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our players to be able to play the No. 1 team in the country," Stony Brook coach Joe Spallina said. "It is something that is special and something that our players will embrace and run full speed toward. UNC is preseason No. 1 for a reason, and in order to be the best you have to play the best. Want to thank the administration on both sides for finding ways it can happen as opposed to why it cannot. Players on both teams haven't played a game in nearly a year, and to start off with this type of matchup is pretty awesome for college lacrosse."
