STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Freshman defensive back Nick Chimienti stepped into a pivotal role on Saturday against UAlbany when teammate TJ Morrison was forced to depart after the first play due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Anthony Del Negro recorded a blocked punt as well as a tackle on special teams.

And both players were honored by CAA Football on Monday for their contributions to a 21-7 win over the Great Danes that earned the Seawolves the Golden Apple.

Chimienti was named the conference's Rookie of the Week and Del Negro was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Chimienti, a 6-foot, 185-pound freshman from Harrisburg, Pa., had five tackles in addition to his first career interception.

"When TJ went down, I knew I had to step up," Chimienti said. "It's a next-man-up mentality that Coach Haynes preaches, along with hard work and preparation, that allowed me to make the play the team needed. The interception played out just like the drill we consistently rep at practice every day, so it was almost first nature when the opportunity presented itself.

"The energy the team brought to this game was unrivaled. Along with TJ coaching me up every time I came to the sideline, it allowed me to play more fluently and with more confidence. We brought the 'Apple' back where it belongs. This win gives us the momentum we need to finish this season strong. I am excited I had the opportunity to get on the field and help the team get the win and bring home the Golden Apple."

Del Negro, a 6-2, 230-pound tight end, now has three blocked punts on the season. His block against Villanova on March 6 had set up a fourth-quarter touchdown.

"The physical mentality that is consistently coached every practice, along with techniques and game plans, make it possible for me to put punters under pressure so frequently," Del Negro said. "Special teams presents opportunities for critical game-changing moments. The trust the coaching staff grants me gives me the ability to perform to my highest level of play.

"Putting Stony Brook University on the map as an elite special-teams unit is the mindset I have going into every game, along with wanting to be the most disruptive player on the field at all times. That's instilled constantly by our head coach, Chuck Priore."
