LOWELL, Mass. — Cameron Avery is an America East Champion Again.

A year after being granted a fifth year due to the COVID-19 pandemic cutting his senior season short and two years after winning the 5000 meters at the America East Indoor Championship, Avery took home the gold in the 10K race to highlight three podium performances by Stony Brook Seawolves after Day 1 of the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Christchurch, New Zealand, native paced a Stony Brook team that currently sits fifth in the America East headed into Sunday's finale after two male performers finished in the top three and earned medals for their squad. Along with Avery, Carlos Santos finished the men's 3000m Steeplechase in nine minutes flat to earn bronze.

Akajia Atkins represented the women's side on the podium, ending the night with a third-place finish in the long jump with a 5.65-meter mark. Six female Seawolves athletes finished in the top two of their respective track events in qualifying, led by Amanda Stead's top qualifying time in the 400m and second-fastest time in the 200m, only behind teammate Dana Cerbone. Three men's Seawolves finished as the top qualifier in their respective events, with Luke Coulter, Anthony Urbancik and Richmond Boateng crossing the line first in the 800m, 100m and 400m hurdles, respectively.
