8/27/2021 5:59:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. — Sophomore Leoni Kunz totaled double figures in both assists and digs in each game on Friday afternoon, but the Stony Brook volleyball program (0-2) fell short of its first win of the season with losses to Florida Atlantic and Wofford on the opening night of the 2021 campaign. Both matches went the distance, with the Owls and Terriers taking the fifth and final set to earn the victories.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native finished the opening match with 10 kills and 13 digs and added 17 kills and 12 digs, the first two double doubles of her career.

They almost pulled off the 2-0 comeback in the first match, coming back to knot the bout at two sets apiece before FAU rattled off a 15-4 fifth to decide it. Hailey Barden was one of four Seawolves in double figures in kills with a career-high 13, while Enitan Omolewa tallied six blocks.

Stony Brook stormed out of the gates in the second match, earning set wins of 25-16 and 32-30 to take the advantage but they were not able to clinch the match as Wofford took the final three frames. Abby Campbell matched her career high with 18 kills on the night, with just one error, finishing with a hitting percentage of .607. Amiyah De'Long (14 kills) joined Omolewa (12), Kunz and Campbell in double figure kills.

NOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"That's the most volleyball I've seen a team play in a day, especially within a 6 hour period. To say we had to grind through it a bit is an understatement but I'm proud of our effort and I think we have the pieces to be really good - especially seeing how balanced we were offensively. But, we have to find a way as a group to finish the job.  Sometimes it comes down to guts and while I thought we showed spurts of really exciting things, we need to feel a pit in our stomach about losing these. We have another short turnaround to compete against North Florida at 10am tomorrow." - head coach Kristin Belzung
