STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Another Team USA women's lacrosse standout has joined the Seawolves.
Joining Stony Brook head coach and Team USA assistant Joe Spallina's staff is Sydney Pirreca, the program announced on Friday.
"This was such an important hire for us with the departure of Kim Hillier to become the head coach at Drexel and to be able to hire Sydney was enormous," Spallina said. "I feel Sydney is a rising star in this profession and she will be a tremendous addition to our program."
The Mount Sinai, N.Y., native, recently named to the Team USA roster for its upcoming Fall Classic along with Seawolves alums Ally Kennedy and Kylie Ohlmiller, joins Stony Brook after two seasons under Gary Gait at Syracuse.
"To see the job she did at Syracuse and helping lead that team to Championship Weekend really fires me up to think of the impact she'll have on our student-athletes," Spallina added.
She helped lead the Orange to a national runner-up finish a season ago after an NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 2019.
"I am extremely honored and excited to get to work with Coach Spallina and the Stony Brook program," Pirreca said. "It's a very special opportunity to be back home and help be part of the continued success."
The 2019 Florida graduate is a two-time Tewaaraton Watch List nominee, as well as a two-time IWLCA All-American. She is the seventh Gator all-time to reach 200 career points, finishing with 215 for her career. She also ranks sixth in program history in goals (154) and assists (61).
Stony Brook is coming off its third NCAA quarterfinal appearance in the last four seasons, taking No. 1 North Carolina to the brink in 2021 before falling by three goals. The Seawolves return experience in the midfield, with Rayna Sabella and Siobhan Rafferty coming back for their senior seasons, as well as a trio of young talent in Jaden Hampel, Ellie Masera and Kailyn Hart.
The Seawolves were recently ranked No. 6 in USA Lacrosse Magazine's Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings ahead of the 2022 campaign.
