Kunz, Omolewa Power Seawolves Attack in Day 1 Split at Towson Invite

9/3/2021 5:56:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TOWSON, Md. — Leoni Kunz and Enitan Omolewa combined for 37 kills to help the Stony Brook attack earn a split in its first two matches at the Towson Invitational. After being swept by the host Tigers in the opener, the Seawolves swept Morgan State in convincing fashion, 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 to earn its first win of the season.

Even with the opening match going the minimum, Stony Brook found itself in every set, dropping a 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 decision to the hosts. The Seawolves were level at 21-21 in the first set after an Abby Campbell kill, but Towson took the final four points of the opening set. The same set-ending run happened in the second frame as Stony Brook was up 20-19 before the Tigers rattled of six in a row to go up 2-0 before finishing the match off in the following stanza.
The Seawolves were in control from start to finish in the nightcap. After a 5-5 start to the first frame, Stony Brook earned 11 of the next 13 points to take the set. After a Morgan State kill made it 12-11 in the second set, the Seawolves would rattle off five in a row to distance themselves to a six-point advantage and they would not let it get closer than five the rest of the way. The final frame was a little more of the same, as a 5-0 run helped Stony Brook erase a one-point deficit to create the space they'd need the rest of the way.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I'm proud of our groupd for earning a win after playing a tight, three-setter with a very good Towson team this morning. We are moving some lineup pieces around so being able to stay focused and disciplined through that is challenging and I thought we managed that. Ultimately, we are a very balanced team and I think that gives us some flexibility to match up in the future if we prove to be able to handle it. Tomorrow will be a great test for our ability to compete against a good Loyola Maryland team." - head coach Kristin Belzung.
