Seawolves Roll to Fifth-Straight Win with Victory Over Binghamton

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (14-2, 5-1 America East) returned to Island Federal Arena on Wednesday night and extended its winning streak to five in a row with a 69-44 victory over fellow SUNY foe Binghamton (4-8, 0-2 America East). The Seawolves are now winners of seven out of their last eight games.
 
Stony Brook's scoring offense was paced by graduate forward India Pagan as she finished with a season-high 21 points and pulled five rebounds in the win. It was the second time this season that Pagan finished a game with 20 or more points. Senior guard Anastasia Warren tallied 12 points as she joined Pagan in double figures.


 
The Seawolves controlled a 29-15 lead after the first half of play. Stony Brook locked in defensively as it limited Binghamton to 19.4 percent shooting from the field and 18.2 percent shooting from three-point range over the first 20 minutes.
 
Stony Brook picked up where it left off and dominated the second half by outscoring the Bearcats, 40-29, en route to the 69-44 victory. The Seawolves held the Bearcats to single-digit points in three quarters. Binghamton was held to eight points in the first quarter, seven points in the second quarter, and nine points in the fourth quarter.


 
For the game, Stony Brook limited the Bearcats to just 27.7 percent shooting from the field and 18.2 percent shooting from three-point range. Binghamton's 27.7 field goal percentage was the second-lowest of any Stony Brook opponent this season (held Rutgers to 26.4 percent shooting on Nov. 16). The Seawolves surrendered just 44 points, which are tied for the second-fewest points allowed in a game this season.
 
STATS AND NOTES
  • Pagan led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and pulled down five rebounds. It was the second time this season that she scored 20 or more points in a game (scored 20 points vs. Penn on Dec. 10). She paced the Seawolves in the first half as she scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting before the break.
  • Warren finished with 12 points and scored in double figures for the ninth time this season. She has scored in double-digits in four consecutive games.
  • Senior guard Earlette Scott filled the stat sheet with six points, a season-high eight rebounds, and five assists.
  • Junior guard Gigi Gonzalez scored six points, dished out six assists, and pulled down six rebounds. It was the seventh time this season that she finished a game with five our more assists.
  • Freshman forward Jamiah Richardson scored four points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field. The four points were the first points of her collegiate career.  
  • With the win the Seawolves picked up their 14th victory of the season and are currently one of 22 teams in the nation with 14 wins or more.
  • Stony Brook improved to 28-23 all-time against Binghamton and have won eight-straight against the Bearcats.
  • The Seawolves are now 8-0 at Island Federal Arena this season and have posted a 54-11 record at home since the start of the 2017-18 season.

Stony Brook concludes its two-game SUNY homestand on Saturday, January 22, when it hosts UAlbany at 2 p.m. The Seawolves have won each of their last six games against the Great Danes dating back to the 2018-19 season. Last season, Stony Brook swept its in-state rival as it defeated UAlbany, 58-46, on February 22, and then picked up a 62-42 win the next day on February 23.
