Women’s Hoops Returns Home for the First of Two SUNY Battles: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (13-2, 4-1 America East) returns to Island Federal Arena for the first of two SUNY battles at home. The Seawolves face-off against Binghamton (4-7, 0-1 America East) on Wednesday, January 19 at 7 p.m. The game is set to air on SNY and ESPN+ with Sam Neidermann (play-by-play) and Rob Pavinelli (analyst) on the call.
 
SERIES HISTORY: It's a battle of the SUNY's as this matchup marks the 51st time the Seawolves and Bearcats will go head-to-head. Stony Brook currently holds a 27-23 record against Binghamton. The first time these two teams saw each other was on January 24, 1993, where the Seawolves defeated the Bearcats, 61-58, in Vestal, N.Y. The last time these two teams faced off was on December 19-20, 2020, where Stony Brook swept the series, 61-52, and, 55-47, respectively, at the Island.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Stony Brook defeated New Hampshire, 71-53, on Sunday, January 16, to secure their fourth conference win in a row. Annie Warren and Leighah-Amori Wool led the scoring for the Seawolves finishing with 12 points apiece. Gigi Gonzalez and India Pagan followed closely behind chipping in 10 points each. The Seawolves dominated down low winning the battle in the paint, 34-24, against New Hampshire.
 
THE GRADUATES: Wool pulled down the 500th rebound of her career in the win against the Wildcats. The forward also recorded a season-high three steals. Pagan nearly picked up a double-double pulling in a team-high eight rebounds and totaling 10 points against New Hampshire. Stony Brook improved to 9-0 when Pagan scores in double figures. Forward McKenzie Bushee provided strength off the bench as she added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and grabbed three rebounds in 18 minutes of play.
 
NEW YORK'S TEAM: The Seawolves are 4-1 this season against teams that hail from New York state. Stony Brook has earned wins over St. John's, Iona, Columbia, and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Seawolves are slated to play two more New York state opponents this season: Binghamton (twice), and UAlbany (twice).
 
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS: The Bearcats fell to the Highlanders, 66-64, on Saturday, January 8, at home. With the loss, Binghamton dropped to 4-7, 0-1 America East on the season. Binghamton's scoring offense is led by junior forward Birna Benonysdottir. Benonysdottir leads the scoring for the Bearcats and the America East averaging 16.5 points over eight games (six starts). Junior guard Denai Bowman follows behind Benonysdottir averaging 13.9 points over 11 starts. Head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord is in her fourth year at the helm of Binghamton. Shapiro Ord led the Bearcats to a 22-9 record during the 2019-20 campaign. Binghamton started off the season 9-0 and recorded their most wins in 21 years. Shapiro Ord's team is currently ranked first in the nation and America East for three-point field goal defense (20.7%).
