GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's cross country team captured their third-overall victory of the season today at the Adelphi Short-Course Showdown held at Bethpage Polo at the Park. As a team, the Seawolves collected 44 points, narrowly defeating American International College by five points.
The Seawolves were one of two teams to have three top 10 finishers. Graduate student
Mahmoud Abdalla led Stony Brook with a career-best fifth-place overall finish in the 5K. Sophomore
Steven Struk and junior
Timothy Weber crossed the line behind Abdalla finishing in seventh and ninth, respectively. Struk and Weber also secured career-bests in the 5K.
The squad had another four runners finishing in the top 20, which led all schools that participated in the Adelphi Short-Course Showdown. Sophomore
Eric Shu and freshman
John Fontanez finished just outside the top 10 earning 11
th and 12
th place finishes, respectively. Rounding out the top 20 was sophomore
Nick Tardugno and freshmen duo
Aidan Carroll and
Luca Maneri. The squad extends their top 10 streak to 19 consecutive meets and has earned a top three team overall finish in four of the five meets this season.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Abdalla earned a fifth-place finish as he crossed the line in 15:30.7. He ran an average-pace of 4:59.3 per mile
- Struck finished behind Abdalla, recording a seventh-place finish as he clocked a time of 15:32.6 and ran an average mile pace of 4:59.9.
- Weber rounded out the top 10 with a time of 15:39.6 which was good for a ninth-place finish. He recorded a pace of 5:02.1 per mile.
- Shu and Fontanez both had outstanding performances, as both finished in the top-12 for the first time in their careers. Shu finished the race in 15:41.3 and Fontanez came in right behind at 15:46.7.
- Tardugno secured an 18th-place finish with a final time of 15:55.0
- The freshman duo of Carroll and Maneri crossed the line in 16:02.1 and 16:03.5, respectively.

Stony Brook is back on the trail next Friday, October 28, when the squad travels to Newark, Del. to compete in the CAA Championship for the first time in program history at 10:30 a.m.
