HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's soccer team made program history on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. With the 2-1 win over CAA rival Hofstra, the Seawolves clinched their first-ever berth into the CAA Championship Tournament.
Stony Brook's offense was fueled by freshman forward Gabrielle Côté who tallied the only two goals for the Seawolves.
Hofstra struck first with an early goal by Anja Suttner that came in the 26
th minute of the contest when she headed the ball in off a corner kick.
The Seawolves rallied back in the 33
rd minute when one of their five first half shots found the back of the net. Freshman forward
Luciana Setteducate dished one over the top that had Côté in a footrace with a Pride defender. Côté was able to get her foot on the ball and chip it over the head of Hofstra's goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The game-winner came in the second half of the contest when Côté buried a rebound off the crossbar that was assisted by senior defender
Catharina von Drigalski and junior forward
Reilly Rich.
Stony Brook ends their first regular season in the CAA, 7-7-4 (4-2-3 CAA), good for 15 points and a sixth-place finish.
