Côté’s Two Goals Secure First-Ever CAA Playoff Berth for Women’s Soccer

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's soccer team made program history on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. With the 2-1 win over CAA rival Hofstra, the Seawolves clinched their first-ever berth into the CAA Championship Tournament.

Stony Brook's offense was fueled by freshman forward Gabrielle Côté who tallied the only two goals for the Seawolves.

Hofstra struck first with an early goal by Anja Suttner that came in the 26th minute of the contest when she headed the ball in off a corner kick.

The Seawolves rallied back in the 33rd minute when one of their five first half shots found the back of the net. Freshman forward Luciana Setteducate dished one over the top that had Côté in a footrace with a Pride defender. Côté was able to get her foot on the ball and chip it over the head of Hofstra's goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The game-winner came in the second half of the contest when Côté buried a rebound off the crossbar that was assisted by senior defender Catharina von Drigalski and junior forward Reilly Rich.

Stony Brook ends their first regular season in the CAA, 7-7-4 (4-2-3 CAA), good for 15 points and a sixth-place finish.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Côté's two goals match her career-high of two which she recorded earlier this season at Drexel on October 9th.
  • von Drigalski's helper marks her seventh of the season which is good for a new career-high and second place in the conference.
  • Sophomore Nicolette Pasquarella recorded eight saves on the day. She has tallied six or more saves in her last seven contests.
  • Setteducate recorded two shots and one assist, extending her shot streak to 11 consecutive games.
  • The playoff berth is the first-time in program history the Seawolves will compete in the CAA Champsionship Tournament.
  • The three away wins are the most in a single season since the 2019 campaign.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I'm happy for the players and for the program to make the playoffs in our first-ever season in the CAA. Hofstra is a well-coached team, but credit to my players to find a way to get the 2-1 victory. Now we turn the page and get ready for the CAA Conference Championship," said head coach Tobias Bischof.
