Despite Late Goal, Women’s Soccer Falls to Northeastern in CAA Championship Quarterfinals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Stony Brook women's soccer team played in its first-ever CAA postseason game on Thursday night, but despite a second half goal, the sixth-seeded Seawolves had their season come to an end with a 2-1 defeat to No. 3 Northeastern.

The Huskies were led by freshman midfielder Vivian Akyirem, who netted both goals in the victory at Vidas Field. Her first of the night came in the 13th minute of the game, which gave Northeastern a lead that it never gave up.

Stony Brook sophomore goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella was sensational in goal and made one of her best saves of the season in the 47th minute. She denied Northeastern's Katherin Marchesseault's penalty kick with a diving save.

In the 58th minute, the Ghana native found the back of the net for the second time, doubling the lead to 2-0. But, the Seawolves fought back, like they have done so many times this season.

Stony Brook junior forward Reilly Rich drilled a penalty kick into the bottom corner of the net in the 70th minute, which cut the deficit in half. Rich led the team with seven goals in the regular season.

Northeastern was able to fend off Stony Brook's final threats and held on to win by a goal. With the loss, Stony Brook's remarkable first season in the CAA culminated and Northeastern advanced to face CAA Championship host Drexel on Sunday.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Rich tallied her eighth goal of the season; she has recorded at least one shot for the sixth consecutive game.
  • Pasquarella finished the match with four saves.
  • Stony Brook fell to Northeastern for the second time this season, with the first match ending 3-0 on the road in September.
  • The Seawolves had eight players total 90 minutes played: Catharina von Drigalski, Linn Beck, Ashley Manor, Kerry Pearson, Morayo Adenegan, Gabby Daniels, Pasquarella, and Rich.
  • Stony Brook finished the season 7-8-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the CAA during the regular season.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I thought our performance in the second half was good and we created plenty of opportunities. In the first half we didn't execute as well but we also have to give credit to Northeastern. Overall, it was a good first year in the CAA with a young team. The last game of the year is always a tough one for me. I am very thankful to our seniors for all they gave to our program. They are good people and will do great things in their future," said head coach Tobias Bischof.
