STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The weekly honors continue to roll in for Stony Brook freshman quarterback
Charlie McKee as he has claimed the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman Player of the Week award as announced by Stats Perform on Monday.
This is the first national honor of McKee's career after he was previously tabbed the CAA Football Rookie of the Week on Monday morning. He is the first member of the Stony Brook football program to earn National Player of the Week honors since John Haggart was named the Stats Perform Defensive Player of the Week during the 2016 season.
McKee was extremely proficient as he connected on 18 of his 21 pass attempts and threw for a career-high 249 yards and tossed a career-best three touchdowns on Saturday. In his second career start, McKee rallied the Seawolves to a 28-27 win over Maine on Homecoming and tossed all three of his touchdowns in the second half.
McKee's pass efficiency rating of 232.5 was the best by a Seawolves signal caller with at least 20 attempts in nearly 11 years. The Oceanside native is now 54-83 through the air on the season, leading the team with six touchdowns. The freshman's three touchdown passes in the win, were the most by a Seawolves quarterback since the 2019 season when
Tyquell Fields threw for three TDs against UAlbany on November 23.
The Seawolves are back on the gridiron on Saturday, October 29, when they travel up north to face UAlbany in the battle for the Golden Apple. Stony Brook has won each of the last two Golden Apple games. The Seawolves earned a 21-7 victory over the Great Danes the last time that they made the trip to Albany on March 27, 2021.
