Women's Basketball Hosts Maine in Play4Kay Pink Game: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (20-2, 11-1 America East) returns home to The Island to host Maine (12-10, 9-3 America East) on Saturday, February 12 at 2 p.m. The game is set to air on SNY and ESPN3 with Sam Neidermann (play-by-play) and Rob Pavinelli (analyst) on the call and will support the Play4Kay foundation to raise awareness for breast cancer.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Seawolves and Black Bears are no strangers to each other as this matchup marks the 48th time these two teams will go head-to-head. Stony Brook currently holds a 23-24 record against Maine. The first time these two teams saw each other was Jan. 11, 2001, where the Seawolves defeated the Black Bears, 68-57, on The Island. The Seawolves pulled ahead of the Black Bears, 64-60, in the America East Championship game on Mar. 12, 2021, to advance to the NCAA tournament. The last time these two teams faced-off was Jan. 9, where Stony Brook defeated Maine, 63-44, in Bangor, Me.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves defeated UMass Lowell, 69-65, on Wednesday, February 9, to secure their 11th conference win in a row. Senior guard Earlette Scott led the scoring for Stony Brook finishing with a game-high 18 points. It was the 11th time this season she scored in double figures. Leighah-Amori Wool followed closely behind raking in 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and pulled down three rebounds. Anastasia Warren filled the stat sheet for Stony Brook chipping in ten points and four rebounds in 35 minutes of play.
 
IN THE RANKINGS: For the second week in a row, Stony Brook has received votes in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll on Tuesday, February 8. The Seawolves have not received a vote in the poll since the 2019-20 season, when the team received a tally on Jan. 21, 2020, marking the first time in program history. Stony Brook was ranked eighth in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 poll that was released on Tuesday, February 8.
 
CAREER MILESTONES: Freshman Erin Turral knocked down a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. Graduate forward India Pagan moved into 10th place on the all-time scorers list with 1,332 career-points, surpassing Joan Gandolf (1990-94).
 
SEAWOLVES SCOUTING REPORT: The 11-game winning streak is a season-high for Stony Brook and the team's longest streak since they won 22 consecutive games during the 2019-20 season. The Seawolves' 11-game winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest active winning streak in the nation. Stony Brook became one of just nine teams in the nation with 20 or more wins on the season. The win marks the eighth time in program history that the Seawolves have recorded 20 or more wins in a season and the third time in the last four years that they have done so. Stony Brook has now won its last five games on the road and improves to 9-2 away from home.
 
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS: The Black Bears defeated UAlbany, 64-55, on Wednesday, February 9, at The Pit in Orono, Me. With the win, Maine improved to 12-10 (9-3 America East) on the season. Maine's scoring offense is led by junior guard Annie Simon. Simon currently leads the Black Bears and the America East averaging 16.2 points over 22 starts. Head coach Amy Vachon is in her sixth year at the helm of Maine. Vachon has been named America East Coach of the Year three seasons in a row (2017-18-2020-21) and has led the Black Bears to two America East Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Vachon also led Maine to the 2020-21 America East Championships where they fell to Stony Brook, 64-60.
