Women's Hoops Returns Home to Take On UMBC in the Second of Back-to-Back Contests: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (21-3, 12-2 America East) returns home to take on UMBC (3-17, 2-8 America East) in the second of back-to-back contests on Wednesday, February 17 at 7 p.m. The game is set to air on SNY and ESPN+ with Sam Neidermann (play-by-play) and Rob Pavinelli (analyst) on the call.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Seawolves and Retrievers are no strangers to each other as this matchup marks the 39th time these two teams will go head-to-head. Stony Brook currently holds a 24-15 record against UMBC. The first time these two teams saw each other was Jan. 7, 2004, where the Seawolves defeated the Retrievers, 53-49, in Baltimore, Md. The last time these two teams faced-off was Feb. 14, where Stony Brook defeated UMBC, 64-48, in Baltimore, Md.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves defeated UMBC, 64-48, on Monday, February 14, marking their 21st win of the season and 12th in the conference. Graduate forward Leighah-Amori Wool led all scorers with a season-high 23 points. Her 23 points are tied for her career-high in points (23 vs. Toledo on Jan. 4, 2020, while at Western Michigan). India Pagan secured her fifth career double-double and second on the season finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. This is the 15th time this season she has scored in double figures and the Seawolves have won each of those contests. Anastasia Warren filled the stat sheet for Stony Brook finishing with 12 points and a season-high nine rebounds, tying her current career-high in rebounds (9 at Maine on Mar. 12, 2021).
 
STRONG ISLAND BASKETBALL: The Seawolves did not let up on defense against the Retrievers winning the battle at the boards, 41-21. Stony Brook is now 16-0 when they out-rebound their opponents. The Seawolves held UMBC to 48 points, marking the tenth time this season Stony Brook has held an opponent to under 50 points. Stony Brook improves to 10-0 when they hold their opponents to under 50 points. The Seawolves have now won their last six games on the road and improve to 10-2 away from home.
 
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS: The Retrievers fell to the Seawolves, 64-48, on Monday, February 14, at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. With the loss, UMBC dropped to 3-17 (2-8 America East) on the season. UMBC's scoring offense is led by graduate forward Janee'a Summers. Summers currently leads the Retriever's averaging 13.8 points over 17 starts. Summers currently sits within the top 30 in the nation and second in the America East rankings for free-throw percentage (86.4). Head coach Johnetta Hayes is in her third year at the helm of UMBC. Hayes helped UMBC to its highest seed in the America East Playoffs since the 2016-17 season and helped the team double its conference wins from the previous season in her first year as head coach.
