Men's Basketball Falls Short in Second of Back-to-Back Contests Against Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. – In a game where it was all about converting at the free-throw line, Hartford was able to capitalize at the stripe. Stony Brook was not able to keep the momentum from the win against the Hawks the night before into Sunday as the Seawolves fell, 74-70, to Hartford at Chase Arena.

Stony Brook was led by four student-athletes all finishing in double-figures on the night. Redshirt junior guard Tykei Greene secured his seventh double-double of the season as he scored a team-high 23 points and pulled down a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Guard's Anthony Roberts and Tyler Stephenson-Moore each chipped in 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

Freshman guard Kaine Roberts had a career night as he knocked down two three-pointers and three field goals to finish with 10 points and added three rebounds, setting career-highs in all the respective categories.

The Seawolves came out strong and took an early lead that was solidified by a three-pointer from Kaine Roberts with 10 minutes left to play in the first half. Stony Brook carried a 35-29 lead into the halftime break but were not able to hold on as Hartford went on an 11-0 scoring run with 7:01 left in the second to earn a 58-48 lead. The Seawolves were able to cut the deficit to one with 17 seconds left in the contest, capitalizing off missed free-throw from the Hawks. Stony Brook could not seal the deal after Moses Flowers converted both of his free-throws with 15 seconds left.

With the loss, the Seawolves drop to 16-12 and 8-7 America East.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Greene recorded his seventh double-double of the season and 12th of his career as he recorded 23 points and pulled down a career-high tying 14 rebounds, the most rebounds he has tallied in an America East matchup (pulled down 12, 4x, last at Binghamton on Jan. 19). The guard has scored 20 or more points in five out of the Seawolves' last six games and has secured double-doubles in four of those contests.
  • Greene's double-double moves him into fifth in the record books for career double-double's surpassing Rayshaun McGrew (2013-16) and sits him tied with Tommy Brenton (2009-10) for sixth for single-season double-doubles.
  • Kaine Roberts set new career-highs in points, rebounds, field goals made, and three-pointers made as he finished with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. He also pulled down three rebounds.
  • Anthony Roberts finished with 13 points and added three rebounds, marking the 21st contest this season Roberts has finished in double figures. He is the only Stony Brook player to finish in double-digits 21 times since the 2019-2020 season.
  • Stephenson-Moore filled the stat sheet for the Seawolves finishing with 11 points on 2-of-4 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from the three.
  • Stony Brook held Hartford well below their average shooting clips, as they shot 40.8 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Their season averages are 45.3 percent and 37.0 percent, respectively.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We really fought hard to get ourselves in position to win a road game against a good team. I thought we really battled hard; we had a couple chances to take the lead late but didn't capitalize. I really was happy with how we battled the last 10 minutes on the road on the back end of a back-to-back series," said head coach Geno Ford.
