STONY BROOK, N.Y. — A five-run third proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon, as the Stony Brook baseball team fell 8-4 to Binghamton, setting up an Easter Sunday rubber game at Joe Nathan Field.
A pair of two-run knocks and a RBI single powered the Bearcats spurt, as they built a 6-0 advantage before the Seawolves could respond.
Matt Senk's club would in the fourth, getting half of the runs back on a
Shane Paradine RBI single and
Matt Brown-Eiring homer to left.
After Binghamton plated two more in the eighth, the Seawolves would score their final run on a
Stanton Leuthner RBI single in the ninth. Stony Brook would have the tying run in the on-deck circle, but that's as far as it would get in the rally attempt.
Colton Book pitched his longest outing of the season, going 6.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two earned over that stretch.
STATS AND NOTES
- Brown-Eiring was one of two Seawolves with a pair of knocks today, extending his team-best, on-base streak to 20 games. He has recorded a hit in seven straight games and has a Seawolves-best 27 RBI on the season, with 17 of them coming in 14 league contests. Matt also leads the squad with a 1.147 OPS in conference play.
- Paradine was the other Stony Brook batter with two hits, increasing his total to 12 such performances this season, the most on the team. He leads the squad with a .311 season average at the plate and is hitting a team-best .362 in league play.
- Book's outing of 6.1 innings in relief is the longest relief stint by a Seawolves pitcher this season. He matched a season high with five strikeouts and his one walk is second-fewest to his none during opening weekend against McNeese State.
- Evan Fox swiped his 19th bag of the season bringing him into a tie for fifth all-time in a single season with Jack Parenty. He has 40 stolen bases in his two-year career, which is one off Parenty's 41 for eighth all-time.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"They have some pretty good pitching. Binghamton, traditionally, has always been a solid program when it comes to pitching and their guy did well today. He mixed well and the guy that came out of the bullpen came right at us ... when we put [Colton] in the game, we were going to see how the game was going and how he pitched. He went out there and did a really good job and I'm really pleased with what he did." - head coach
Matt Senk.
