STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball program was not able to snag the rubber game on Sunday afternoon, as Binghamton scored four runs across the seventh and eighth innings for a 6-4 victory over the host Seawolves at Joe Nathan Field.
A pair of two-run hits proved to be the difference, as a two-run double in the seventh gave Binghamton a 4-3 advantage and a two-run home run in the eighth made it 6-3.
Stony Brook started the scoring in the bottom half of the first, with
Shane Paradine lacing a double down the left-field line and
Brett Paulsen dropping a single into left center, giving the Seawolves a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
Binghamton responded with a RBI single in the fourth and solo home run in the fifth, knotting the game at two apiece.
Paradine would answer again in the bottom half, sending his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall, giving the Seawolves a 3-2 lead.
A ninth-inning sacrifice fly from
Matt Brown-Eiring would cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Seawolves would not get any closer.
STATS AND NOTES
- Brown-Eiring's seventh-inning walk extended his on-base streak to a team-high 21 games.
- Paradine matched his career high with his second, four-hit game of the season. He also had four knocks in a 4-for-5 effort at Maine on March 27 and recorded two such performances a season ago. It is his first, four-hit game at Joe Nathan Field and matches the most hits in a game by a Seawolves hitter this season, joining Paulsen and Evan Giordano.
- Paulsen recorded his 11th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Ryan Micheli recorded the first multi-knock game of his career, going 2-for-3 at the dish.
- Devin Sharkey recorded his second consecutive scoreless inning on Sunday, throwing the final frame as he did on Friday. He struck out four and walked two over the two weekend innings of work.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Except for the start of today, they did a good job of walking us. I really think we left some opportunities out there against their starter today. They did a good job of maintaining a mix on us and overall they pitched well ... there's a lot of things you can drill, but hitting with runners on base is a mindset. Hopefully, when given that opportunity next weekend, we'll do a better job and we'll have a better approach and execution." - head coach
Matt Senk.
