2022 Stony Brook WLAX at UMass Lowell

Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Assistant Director for Communications

Stout Defense from No. 5 Women's Lacrosse Powers Eighth Straight Victory

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The top-ranked defense in the country became just the third team this season to hold its opposition to one goal or fewer, as the fifth-ranked Stony Brook women's lacrosse team rolled to a 16-1 victory over UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon in Lowell, Mass.

The Seawolves joined Boston College (vs. Harvard on April 12) and Old Dominion (vs. Delaware St., on March 11) as the third team to hold its opponent to a goal, though no team in the country has pitched a shutout in 2022 this season.

Stony Brook held the River Hawks scoreless until the 3:10 mark of the third when the hosts got their only tally on a free-position marker.

On the offensive end, it was business as usual as the squad scored the first 12 goals of the game, including four from Ellie Masera, to jump out to the early lead.

The sophomore midfielder scored the first two goals of the game within nine seconds of each other, three ticks from tying the NCAA record, to jump start the Stony Brook offense. Kailyn Hart also recorded a first-half hat trick to aid the cause.

The stingy Seawolves defense was again led by Haley Dillon in the caused turnover department, as she recorded a pair to lead all Stony Brook field players. Kameron Halsall had two caused turnovers in the cage, along with her three first-half saves.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Masera tallied her eighth game of four or more goals, bringing her season total to a team-high 44. She entered the weekend 15th in the country in goals per game (3.64).
  • Hart had her third consecutive such performance and seventh game of four or more tallies. She has 32 total points in her last six games and has 51 for the campaign.
  • Kyla Zapolski recorded her second hat trick with the Seawolves, joining her three-goal effort at Brown with today's. She also matched her season high in points with three.
  • Halsall and Charlie Campbell split time in the cage, with Campbell subbing in for the final 30 minutes. Halsall's effort brought her season goals-against average down to 4.67, while Campbell's now sits at 8.43.
  • The one goal allowed is the fewest by an opponent since March 27, 2021, when the defense allowed just one to Hartford. It is tied for the fewest goals allowed since the Seawolves' shutout of Binghamton on April 20, 2016.
  • Stony Brook's defense has allowed single-digit goals in eight consecutive games. They have a 4.63 GAA during that span. They also allowed a season-low .083 shot percentage, eight ground balls and six draw controls.

UP NEXT
The Seawolves have a quick turnaround, as they hit the road again for a Tuesday matinee at Binghamton. First draw from Vestal, N.Y., is slated for 4 p.m.
