CATONSVILLE, Md. — Down 5-2 in the eighth, the Stony Brook baseball program found another gear.
The Seawolves scored two in the eighth, two in the ninth and
Devin Sharkey held down the fort to strand the bases loaded in a 6-5 victory over UMBC on Friday night to open the road series with a victory.
Shane Paradine's RBI groundout and
Matt Brown-Eiring's moonshot to left cut the deficit to one after the eighth. The Seawolves would take the lead in the ninth, as
Cole Durkan scored on a passed ball to tie it and Paradine again drove in a run on a groundout, giving the visitors the lead for good.
Brendan Patterman worked eight of the last nine outs but would leave the game with runners on first and second with two outs. After a four-pitch walk, Sharkey settled in and struck out Michael Cilio to end the ballgame for his second save of the year.
The Seawolves fell behind early as starter
Ben Fero was hit for three runs in the first before settling in for a six-inning outing.
Evan Giordano and
Ryan Micheli homered in the fourth and fifth inning, respectively, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
UMBC would add two run-scoring outs to re-extend the lead to three runs heading into the eighth but the Seawolves would rally for the win.
STATS AND NOTES
- Over his last three contests, Paradine is hitting .500 at the plate (7-for-14), has driven in five runs and scored four of his own. He's also swatted a pair of doubles and a home run.
- To go along with his sixth homer of the year, Giordano had a team-high three hits in a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He is 5-off-11 over the last three games, crossing home plate five times. He's also gone yard in back to back contests. HIs three-hit day is the second of his season and 10th multi-hit game of the year, making him the fourth Seawolves player into double figures in that category.

- After the first inning, Fero threw five more innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits throughout the rest of his tenure on the mound.
- Patterman earned his fourth win of the season, working through 2.2 innings of work and holding the Retrievers to just one run on one hit.
- Brown-Eiring slugged his sixth home run of the season, tied for the team lead, while Micheli's long ball is the second of his campaign.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We did a great job of hanging in there after UMBC jumped us for three runs in the first inning. In particular, senior
Ben Fero went on to throw six solid innings and senior
Evan Giordano led the way for us offensively with his quality ABs the entire game." - head coach
Matt Senk.
