SAN DIEGO – After a standout five-year career at Stony Brook, graduate midfielder Mike McCannell has officially signed with the San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and will join the team immediately. McCannell was selected fifth overall by the Seals in the 2021 NLL Entry Draft this past August.

"I couldn't be more excited to start my career with the Seals organization and play in front of the San Diego fans," said McCannell as he discussed signing his rookie deal with the Seals.

McCannell is coming off of a stellar final season on Long Island as he was named to the All-America East First Team for the second-straight season. The graduate registered 37 points (24 goals, 13 assists) in 14 starts.

"We are so excited for Mike to live out his dream of playing in the NLL this weekend. Mike has been a tremendous representative of everything Stony Brook lacrosse is all about. He is a talented player, fantastic leader, and a great student. We look forward to watching him with the Seals!" said men's lacrosse head coach Anthony Gilardi.

He ranked 10th in the league in goals, 11th in goals per game (1.71), tied for ninth in assists, tied for 11th in assists per game (.93), ninth in points, and 12th in points per game (2.64). He registered six multi-goal games, including five hat tricks.

McCannell rattled the cage a career-high tying five times in a thrilling game against No. 6 Rutgers on March 5. He dished out a season-best three assists in the 7-3 road win at Binghamton on April 16.

The captain has left his mark on the Stony Brook program after playing in 63 games over the course of five seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 135 points, 74 goals, and 61 assists. McCannell scored three game-winning goals in his career, including two this season as he tallied the game-winners against Fairfield (Feb.12) and Dartmouth (Apr. 5).

He registered his 100th career point in the season-opening win against Fairfield on February 12. His 24 goals this season were a single-season career-high and his 37 points were one shy of tying his career-best.

McCannell became the 12th Stony Brook men's lacrosse player drafted since 2008, and the seventh member of the Seawolves picked over the last five seasons. He joins active Stony Brook alums Ryland Rees (Rochester Knighthawks), Challen Rogers (Toronto Rock), Jordan McBride (Vancouver Warriors), Rhys Duch (Halifax Thunderbirds), Derek Lloyd (Vancouver Warriors), Kevin Crowley (Philadelphia Wings), and Harrison Matsuoka (Calgary Roughnecks) in the NLL.

The Seals will host the Colorado Mammoth for game one of the West Conference Finals on Friday, May 13, at 7 p.m. (PT). The game is set to air on ESPNU and will stream on ESPN+.
