STONY BROOK, N.Y. — At the end of a back and forth first quarter, the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team locked down, holding Big Ten finalist Rutgers to three goals over the final 45 minutes, contributing to an 11-7 victory in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, setting up a rematch with No. 1 North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
The Seawolves responded to the four-goal Rutgers run with a four-goal run of their own, taking the lead at 7-4 with 4:20 to go in the second quarter.
Rutgers again responded with three straight, tying the game with 12:02 to go in the third quarter. They would not score again.
Jesse Arline provided the game-winner at the 10:09 mark, with
Siobhan Rafferty,
Kailyn Hart and
Ellie Masera all adding insurance in a 2:57 span in the fourth quarter.
Hart's third goal made for her 14th hat trick and her 11th consecutive three-goal performance.
Haley Dillon anchored the game defensively, with three ground balls and four caused turnovers, while
Charlie Campbell was one save from tying the Stony Brook NCAA Tournament program record with 12 saves.
STATS AND NOTES
- Hart's three-goal performance is the 18th of her career, leading the Seawolves once again in goals. She entered the day 18th in the country in goals per game at 3.59 per day and has now recorded a point in 14 consecutive games.
- Campbell's 12 saves match her season-high that she had on Feb. 20 at Syracuse and are the most by a Seawolves goalkeeper this season. Her tally came one short of Anna Tesoriero's 13 she had at Maryland on May 20, 2017. Tesoriero also had 12 saves in an overtime win at James Madison on May 10, 2019.
- The Seawolves qualified for their fourth NCAA Quarterfinal in five seasons. They head to Maryland in 2017, Boston College in 2018 and North Carolina in 2021.
- In all eight NCAA Tournament games at LaValle Stadium, the Seawolves have held their opposition to single digits in goals.
- Arline's tally is the first in her NCAA Tournament career.
- For the third consecutive season, the Seawolves ended the campaign undefeated at LaValle Stadium. The 28 wins in a row are the second-longest active home winning streak in the country.
