2022 Stony Brook BASE vs. UMBC

Game Recap: Baseball |

Pitching Helps Seawolves Secure Mother's Day Sweep

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Holding the visiting UMBC Retrievers to just five runs over 17 innings of baseball, the Stony Brook baseball team won its fifth and sixth straight games with 3-2 and 6-3 victories at a Mother's Day doubleheader at Joe Nathan Field.

Shane Paradine's game-winning single in extras in the opener gave the Seawolves a 3-2 victory in the opener. Brandon Lashley went seven innings, allowing two earned and scattering five hits before Kyle Johnson's scoreless eighth paved the way for the catcher's heroics.

Colton Book and Josh O'Neill combined for a four-hitter in the second contest, as the two combined for six strikeouts. Matt Brown-Eiring recorded three of the Seawolves' seven hits, scoring two runs and driving in a seventh-inning insurance tally.

GAME 1 - Stony Brook 3, UMBC 2 (8 innings)
  • Stony Brook scored the first two runs of the day, as Brown-Eiring's RBI infield single gave them the lead in the first. Chris Leone then scampered home on a misplayed throw by the UMBC third baseman, doubling the advantage in the second.
  • UMBC tied it in the fourth, as a line drive into right got past Derek Yalon and rolled to the wall, allowing one run to score. A miscommunication during the relay opened the gate for heads-up baserunning from the batter, Drew Roberts, and he sped home to tie the game.
  • In the seventh, Ryan Micheli hit an infield single to get on and Matt DeStefano took his place as a pinch runner. He would get to third on a pair of balks before a groundout ended the frame.
  • After Johnson's scoreless top half, the stage was set in the bottom half of the inning. Yalon recorded an infield hit, Evan Giordano and Evan Fox both drew walks and Paradine won it with a line drive into left.
GAME 2 - Stony Brook 6, UMBC 3
  • Brown-Eiring flew home on a wild pitch to start the scoring in the second inning and Leone doubled the lead on a single to right-center.
  • Cole Durkan made it a 3-0 game, scoring on a fielding error at third off the bat of Yalon.
  • UMBC again scored all of its runs in one inning, as an error and two-run single knotted the proceedings at three.
  • Durkan gave the Seawolves the lead for good in the sixth, beating out a grounder to first that allowed Brown-Eiring to score.
  • Paradine and Brown-Eiring each drove in a run in the seventh, giving Stony Brook a cushion.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Brown-Eiring finished the weekend hitting .455, going 5-for-11 at the plate and recording three RBI. His RBI streak extended to seven games, totaling 12 during that stretch.
  • The Seawolves finished 8-for-18 over the three games with runners in scoring position and held UMBC to 5-for-20.
  • Lashley's seven-inning outing is the longest by a Seawolves pitcher this season. It's also the deepest appearance for him in his collegiate career, besting the 6.2 he pitched against Western Carolina on March 5.
  • Johnson's win is his second of the year and sixth of his career. That brings his career record to 6-3 on the Seawolves' staff.
  • Giordano has scored in five of his last six outings after crossing home in Game 2 today. He's touched home eight times during that span.
  • For the third start of his career, Book did not allow an earned run. This is his longest outing (6.0) without allowing one, besting his comparable five-inning starts against McNeese State (Feb. 19) and UMBC (April 24). It matches the longest start of his collegiate career and dropped his ERA to a season-low 3.35.
  • O'Neill recorded his third save of 2021, throwing three scoreless to lock down the sweep. He lowered his season-best ERA to 4.75 and has a 1.50 ERA over his last four outings, allowing two earned over 12 innings.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"This was a pitching and defense kind of day with the way the wind was blowing. [Our pitching staff] did a really good job of limiting their walks. When you force teams to hit the ball into the teeth of the wind, like they did, it's going to work to your advantage. I thought that not walking people and doing a good job of hitting their spots helped them pitch as well as they did" - head coach Matt Senk.
