Beck, Maracina Help Women's Soccer Complete Frantic Comeback to Earn Opening Night Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — After a night of close calls and possession control, it looked as if the Stony Brook Women's Soccer program would have a hard-luck, season-opening defeat in its first matchup as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Enter freshmen Linn Beck and Hannah Maracina.

The two making their collegiate debuts scored goals 2:04 apart and the Seawolves roared back to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Rams on Opening Night of the 2022 college soccer season.

Maracina's goal came after she drew the foul in the box to set up the tying opportunity, as Beck slotted home the spot kick to knot the affair.

The Seawolves controlled just 45 percent of the ball in the first half and trailed 1-0 despite a 7-6 shot advantage. They dominated the second 45 minutes, however, outshooting the Rams 12-3 and turned a 10 percentage point possession deficit into controlling a majority of the ball overall.

Stony Brook earned its sixth consecutive home-opening victory, a streak that dates back to 2016.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Both Beck and Maracina recorded their first collegiate goals in their first career starts. Beck led all freshmen with 86 minutes.
  • Ava King recorded the first win of her collegiate career, playing a clean final 45 minutes along with an assist on the game winner.
  • Along with Beck and Maracina, Ashley Manor, Angelina Lent and Luciana Setteducate all started in their collegiate debuts. Jadyn Lui and Gabrielle Côté combined for over a half of action coming off the bench to start their collegiate careers.
  • After another 90-minute performance today, centerback Kerry Pearson extended her streak of complete-game performances to 20 contests. She has played every minute of every game since April 15, 2021, the America East Semifinals against Vermont.
  • Reilly Rich was a persistent threat in attack, firing a team-high six shots with three on frame. Beck also sent three shots on goal and five in total.
