STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook football team kicked off the 2022 season on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium in front of 7,101 fans. The Seawolves and Rams played an even first half, but a second half surge by Rhode Island pushed them to a 35-14 win over Stony Brook.
Graduate defensive back
Carthell Flowers-Lloyd opened up the scoring for the Seawolves as he shed a block on a blitz to record a strip sack of Rhode Island quarterback Kasim Hill. Flowers-Lloyd scooped the ball up and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown to put the first points of the year on the board for Stony Brook with 10:14 to play in the first quarter.
A back-and-forth first half saw the Rams score back-to-back touchdowns to go up 14-7 at the 10:50 mark in second quarter. With 50 seconds to play in the first half, the Seawolves punched back when redshirt senior running back
Ty Son Lawton found the end zone with a two-yard touchdown run to tie the game up at 14-14.
Rhode Island went on to score three touchdowns in the second half which propelled it to the 35-14 advantage that it held on to win by.
The Seawolves rushed for 167 yards in the game which marked the team's fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game and 36
th in their last 40 games played dating back to the start of the 2018 season.
STATS AND NOTES
- Flowers-Lloyd was a force on the defensive side of the ball as he finished with six solo tackles, two TFLs, and one sack. His sack forced Hill to fumble and he recovered it for his first career touchdown.
- Redshirt senior Joshua Zamot and redshirt freshman Daron Bryden split time at quarterback for the Seawolves. Zamot rushed for a team-high 83 yards on 15 carries and went 6-16 through the air for 74 yards. His 83 rushing yards were the most by a Seawolves' quarterback since Tyquell Fields ran for 85 yards at Rhode Island on September 28, 2019.
- Lawton found the end zone with a two-yard run at the end of the second quarter. The CAA Football Preseason Offensive Player of the Year ran for 46 yards and caught one pass for 15 yards. Lawton scored the 21st rushing touchdown of his career which moves him into sole possession of eighth-place in rushing touchdowns in program history.
- Redshirt sophomore linebacker Tyler King made a team-high seven tackles. It was the 10th time in his career that he finished a game with seven tackles or more. Fellow linebacker, graduate Reidgee Dimanche totaled six tackles (three solo, three assists).
- Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Rodney Faulk made four tackles (two solo, two assists) and registered his first career sack in his collegiate debut.

Stony Brook is back on the field on Saturday, September 17, when it travels to FBS foe UMass for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off. The Seawolves will be on the bye for Week 2 of the season.
