STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook volleyball team battled tough against Big Ten foe Maryland, but fell 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 16-25) in its first match of the Stony Brook Invitational on Friday night.
Despite the result, the Seawolves and Terrapins played a tight first two sets. The teams traded blows, but Maryland ultimately pulled away in the latter stages of each set thanks to late runs that put them out in front. Maryland closed the match by knocking off the Seawolves, 25-16, in the third set.
Stony Brook and Maryland went head-to-head for the fifth time in history. It was the teams' second meeting in as many seasons as they last matched up on September 28, 2021, at the Maryland Invite in College Park.
STATS AND NOTES
- Freshman outside hitter Kali Moore led Stony Brook in kills with nine and picked up six digs.
- Junior libero Julia Patsos recorded an early season-high of 16 digs. The libero has registered 10 or more digs in each of Stony Brook's first three matches of the season.
- Junior setter Torri Henry dished out a team-high 28 assists and picked up eight digs as she was two digs shy of her third-straight double-double.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"First of all, it was great to come together with all four teams tonight and stand against racism. We are with Duke volleyball student-athlete Rachel Richardson and will continue to stand against racist acts.
I didn't think we ever got in control of the tempo of tonight's match. Ultimately, we were too high-error against a team that is going to make you earn your points. We executed well defensively for two sets but a couple serving runs by Maryland were the difference and I thought we had chances throughout those to change the course of the match.
I'm excited for the pieces we have and the opportunities we have tomorrow against two more good and physical teams," said coach Belzung.
