STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's and women's cross country teams were recognized on Thursday morning for their terrific performances in the classroom this past fall semester as both teams were named All-Academic by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

In addition to receiving All-Academic Team honors, graduate student
Robert Becker and sophomore
Grace Weigele earned individual distinctions as USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes.

The men's and women's cross country programs both finished with a 3.34 cumulative GPA for the fall semester to be honored on the list.

The Hurley, N.Y. native, earned the honors after capturing 20th place and claiming All-Region honors at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. Becker is currently finishing his degree in History. He also has a cumulative GPA of 3.78 for his Stony Brook career.

The Long Island native, Weigele, registered a team-best 26th-place overall finish, as the she crossed the line at 21:10.4 in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The sophomore is currently pursuing her degree in Health Sciences and has a cumulative GPA of 3.46 for her first three semesters at Stony Brook.

In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships. For the teams, they must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period.

Overall, there were 124 men from 58 different institutions and 171 women from 88 different institutions who were named All-Academic Athletes for Division I based on their accomplishments during the 2022 season. There were 249 women's and 216 men's Division I programs named on the All-Academic Teams.
