Abel Ties A Program Record For Men’s Track And Field At Wagner Invite

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's track and field team competed in the Wagner College Invitational hosted by Wagner College on Friday at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
 
Senior Patrick Abel led the way for the Seawolves with a record-tying run in the 60 meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 6.96 to tie the program's record and open the day for the Seawolves at Wagner.
 
He also had the team's best overall finish of the day. The Brooklyn, New York, native earned a second-place finish in the 200 meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 22.16 seconds.
 
Stony Brook possessed three total top 10 finishes in the 200 meter event. Sophomore Nicolas Lavazoli finished in seventh-place, with a final time of 22.38 and freshman Eli Rathburn came in eighth-place with a final time of 22.48.
 
Abel collected two top five finishes on the day. Stony Brook totaled three top five finishes on Friday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Freshman Aleksander Micich collected a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a score of 6.90m. 
  • Abel collected a fifth-place finish at 6.96 in the prelims for the 60 meter to advance into the final heat. The Brooklyn native finished the final heat in third-place with a final time of 6.99.
  • In the one mile run, sophomore Thomas Burfeind and graduate student Mahmoud Abdalla paced the squad with a sixth and seventh-place overall finish at 4:23.05 and 4:23.06, respectively. Freshman Luca Maneri rounded out the top 20 with a final time of 4:27.57.
  • Sophomore Darnell Paul recorded a 13.33m in the shot put finals for 12th-place. 
  • Junior Richmond Boateng and Rathburn finished in the top 10 for the 400 meter dash. Boateng came in at 50.02 for fourth-place and Rathburn followed right behind in sixth place at 50:40.
  • The trio of sophomores Eben Bragg and Steven Struk and freshman Michael Hawkes earned eighth, ninth and 10th place finishes, respectively, in the 3000 meter. Bragg led the pack coming in at 8:45.88, Struk and Hawkes followed, finishing in 8:48.06 and 8:50.43. Sophomores Eric Shu and Tardugno rounded out the top 16 with 15th and 16th place finishes, respectively. 
  • Sophomore Justin Vazquez finished in 14th-place in the 200 meter dash. His final time was 22.70 seconds. The Seawolves had four student-athletes finish in the top 15 in the event that had nearly 60 participants.

"We opened the New Year with the Wagner Invitational today. It was an opportunity for both teams to shake off the last of the Holiday spirit and get refocused for the season ahead. For the men, Patrick Abel led the way, tying the school record for the 60m and also taking second in the 200m. An exciting start to the season for him. Alexandria Earle showed the way for the women by winning the High Jump, Jade and Danella had encouraging season opening performances in the 60m and hurdles, respectively," said head coach Andy Ronan.

The Seawolves are back on the track Saturday, January 14 when they travel back to Staten Island for the Penn 10-Team Select at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
