HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. --The Stony Brook volleyball team defeated the Hofstra Pride, 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-12), on Saturday at the the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The victory over the Pride marked the Seawolves first win over Hofstra since Sept. 28, 1999.
The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Leoni Kunz, who registered 12 kills and 12 digs on the day. Kali Moore also added 15 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Torri Henry chipped in for with 17 digs to go with 10 blocks from Abby Campbell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Pinpoint serving helped the Seawolves earn a set-one victory 25-22. Stony Brook recorded five aces in the set victory, including three by Moore. The Seawolves opened up an 11-6 lead in the stanza following the block from Ayanna Pierre Louis and Moore and coasted to victory from there. The squad got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Hofstra attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | SBU fell in set two 25-16 to tie the match 1-1. The Seawolves went behind on the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.
SET 3 | Stony Brook then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Seawolves scored first and never trailed in the set to secure a 25-16 victory. Stony Brook opened up as much as a nine point lead at 24-15 from a kill by Pierre Louis before closing out the set. The offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Stony Brook's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Hofstra attacks in the stanza.
SET 4 | Stony Brook couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Pride forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory. The Seawolves dropped a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way.
SET 5 | Stony Brook and Hofstra went back and forth all game, trading set wins until the Seawolves took set five 15-12 and the match. The Seawolves endured a back-and-forth final set to emerge victorious in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set. Kunz and Campbell sealed the victory for the squad after blocking the final Pride attack. More details to come.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook had three players in double figures in kills (Moore, Kunz, and Jackson).
- Stony Brook had three players in double figures in digs (Henry, Patsos, and Kunz)
- Moore had a team-high three aces in the win, the second-most she has had in a match this season (5 vs Columbia on Sept. 6 and 5 vs Delaware on Oct. 15). Also, she had a team-best 15 kills for Stony Brook.
- Campbell had a match-high and career-high 10 blocks in the victory.
- Kunz registered a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs
- Stony Brook served up five aces on the way to a first-set victory.
- Stony Brook never trailed on the way to winning the third set 25-16.
- Stony Brook got a team-high 17 digs and 41 assists from Henry. It was her fourth double-double in the last five matches.
- The conference victory improved Stony Brook's record to 15-13 overall and 10-7 in CAA action.
