Stony Brook Gets 26 Bench Points In 82-61 Win At Le Moyne

Clark, Pittman, and G. Gonzalez Record Double-Figures

SYRACUSE, NY --The Stony Brook women's basketball team got a 26-point performance from the bench on the way to an 82-61 win over the Le Moyne Dolphins on the road Saturday.
 

The Seawolves (2-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Khari Clark, who had 19 points and eight rebounds. Sherese Pittman tacked on 14 points, seven assists and two steals and Gigi Gonzalez helped out with 14 points, seven assists and two steals.

The Stony Brook offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making 10 threes on 24 attempts. Victoria Keenan paced the Seawolves behind the line by draining three treys in the contest.

Also, Stony Brook forced 17 Le Moyne turnovers in Saturday's game. The Seawolves turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Keenan led the way individually with three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

After falling behind 3-2, Stony Brook went on an 8-0 run with 9:01 left in the first quarter to take a 10-3 lead. The Seawolves then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-18 advantage. Stony Brook did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 22 points close to the basket as Pittman led the squad with 10 points in the frame.
 

Stony Brook kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 3:32 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 37-27 following the two made free throws by G. Gonzalez. The Seawolves kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 40-30 advantage heading into halftime. Stony Brook was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 18 points (two by G. Gonzalez). 

The Seawolves wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a three from Gonzalez, to expand its lead further to 54-30 with 3:46 to go in the third. The Seawolves held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 62-38 edge. 
 

Stony Brook kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Keenan's three, to grow the lead to 70-41 with 6:50 to go in the contest. Stony Brook fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
 

STATS AND NOTES

  • Long Island's team shot 41% from deep, knocking down 10 of 24 long range attempts.
  • The Seawolves held the Dolphins to only 36.4 percent shooting from the field.
  • SBU never trailed after taking a 22-18 first quarter lead.
  • The squad shared the ball all afternoon, recording an assist on 89 percent of made field goals.
  • Stony Brook had a 34-26 edge on the boards in the win.
  • The Stony Brook bench came alive by scoring 26 points to its scoring output, including Keenan with a team-high 9 points off the bench. 
  • The Stony Brook defense forced 17 turnovers.
  • Clark led the Seawolves with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds. She is now averaging 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds through her first two games with Stony Brook. 
  • Pittman had a career-high seven assists in the victory. She also tallied 14 points, 4 rebounds, and two steals.
  • G. Gonzalez paced the Seawolves offense with a season-high seven assists and recorded 14 points. 
  • Delaney Yarborough, Dallysshya Moreno, and Lauren Filien all tallied their first points of the season this afternoon. 
  • Stony Brook is now 4-1 all-time against Le Moyne.

"I thought today was a total team effort. It was really nice to see some of our younger players out there on the floor gaining experience. I thought we got better defensively which will help us in the future," said head coach Ashley Langford.
