OPENING KICK
- Stony Brook football remains on the road for its final contest away from home in 2023, taking on 3-5 Monmouth in CAA Football action on Saturday at 1 p.m.
- Monmouth holds a 6-4 edge in the overall series, with a 3-2 record in New Jersey. Stony Brook looks to grab its first victory in the series since 2007.
- Half of the 10 contests against Monmouth all-time have been played within a score.
- Saturday's Week 10 contest is a rematch of a season ago, where Stony Brook rallied from a 17-0 deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but fell on a late touchdown.
- Wide receiver Anthony Johnson remains at the top of the freshman ranks in a pair of receiving statistics, and also ranks top three in the CAA and top 25 in the country.
- Graduate student Aidan Kaler continues to lead the Stony Brook defense on the tackle sheet, totaling 68 so far through eight games.
- Five different receivers have caught their first career touchdown pass this season.
THE TOP FRESHMAN IN THE COUNTRY
- Redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson leads all FCS freshmen in average receptions and average receiving yards.
- He is tied for 2nd in the CAA with 6.3 receptions per game and also third with 78.4 receiving yards per game.
- The Burlington, New Jersey native is now tied for 13th in receptions per game and tied for 22nd in receiving yards per game.
- In the last four games, Johnson is averaging 7.75 receptions per game and 91.5 receiving yards per contest.
- Johnson has hauled in a reception of at least 17 yards in every game this season.
- With two games left to play, Johnson is 10th in Stony Brook history with 54 receptions, holding the most since 2017 when Ray Bolden caught 66 passes.
- His 627 receiving yards are the most for Stony Brook since Nick Anderson put up 870 in 2019.
- He is also the first SBU receiver since Anderson to record multiple 100-yard games in a season.
KALER LEADS THE DEFENSIVE CORPS
- Once again at the top of the tackle sheet, Aidan Kaler recorded another seven tackles for Stony Brook against Villanova.
- He has eclipsed his season high from last year, picking up 68 tackles thus far in just eight games played.
- His 8.5 tackles per game ranks tied for fifth in the CAA and his 42 solo tackles is also tied for fifth. The Sayville, Long Island native is tied for 18th in the FCS in solo tackles.
- Kaler has made at least five stops in 11 straight games, doing so in every contest since Nov. 5, 2022.
MCKINNIE TAKES STARTING ROLE ON O-LINE
- East Carolina transfer D'Angelo McKinnie has found a new starting role since returning from injury, transferring to an offensive line role from a tight end.
- McKinnie has started the last three games on the line as a right tackle.
- He is playing his third different position in his collegiate career, as he started at ECU as a defensive lineman.
SPECIAL TEAM UNITS ON THE COVERAGE
- Stony Brook ranks top five in the CAA in both net kicking and net punting.
- SBU is first in the CAA in net kickoff yardage, netting 43.2 yards per kickoff.
- Spencer Biscoe has 10 touchbacks of 26 kickoffs, putting the ball into the endzone 38.4% of the time.
- The punting unit ranks fifth in the league, with a 37.4 net punting average, as Clayton Taylor ranks third in the league with 1,870 total punting yards.
- Stony Brook has allowed just 53 punt return yards all season, fifth-fewest in the CAA.
