STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook University men's lacrosse, in conjunction with head coach
Anthony Gilardi, announced its 2024 schedule on Thursday. The 2024 home slate highlights include non-conference home games against North Carolina, Penn State and Rutgers, a road trip to Air Force and four CAA home contests including Hofstra in the regular season finale.
"We are looking forward to playing a tough non-conference schedule. We have some elite teams coming to LaValle Stadium for some big early season matchups," Gilardi said. "These tough non-conference games are set up to prepare us for the gauntlet of CAA play."
The Seawolves start the 2024 campaign on the road on February 4Â at Sacred Heart, facing the Pioneers for the 10th time in the last 12 seasons. Stony Brook is 7-2 against Sacred Heart during that span and has won three straight in the series history. It will be the Seawolves' first trip to Connecticut to face the Pioneers since 2017, a 12-11 victory for Stony Brook.
Stony Brook opens the home slate at LaValle on February 10 against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights finished last season at No. 16 in the RPI and slot in at No. 15 in the USA Lacrosse Preseason Top 20. Stony Brook has dropped two consecutive contests to Rutgers and last topped the Scarlet Knights in 2020.
One week later, Stony Brook welcomes another powerhouse from the Big Ten: Penn State. The Nittany Lions, who lost to No. 1 Duke in the NCAA Semifinal last season, visit LaValle on February 17. Penn State opens that season at No. 4 in the USA Lacrosse Preseason Top 20. Stony Brook's lone victory over the Nittany Lions came in 2006 in Pennsylvania.
Non-conference action continues the following week when Stony Brook travels to Colorado to take on Air Force. The Seawolves defeated the Falcons last season, 15-8, at LaValle Stadium and have won three straight against Air Force.
CAA play commences as the calendar turns to March, with Stony Brook hosting Hampton on March 2. The Seawolves get right back into non-conference action, wrapping up that portion of the schedule with a neutral site game against Dartmouth (March 5) and a pair of home contests against Providence (March 9) and North Carolina (March 16). UNC begins 2024 at No. 19 in the USA Lacrosse Preseason Top 20. The Seawolves look to earn their first win against the Tar Heels, who visit the Island for the first time since 2003.
The focus shifts towards conference play again, seeing Stony Brook close out the month of March at home against Monmouth (March 23) and on the road at Towson (March 30). April kicks off at LaValle when Drexel comes to town on April 6. A rematch of the 2023 CAA Championship follows when the Seawolves travel to face-off with Delaware on April 13.Â
After its final road game on April 20 at Fairfield, Stony Brook returns home to host Hofstra for the Battle of Long Island on April 30 at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves took down the Pride last season in Hempstead and won the last meeting at LaValle in 2020.
The top four seeds qualify for the CAA Championship, with the CAA Semifinal taking place on May 2 and the CAA Championship set for May 4. Stay tuned for information regarding tickets, which will go on sale in the new year.
